Particulate Matter, Airborne microorganisms and resistant Staphylococcus aureus in suspension in Orthopedic Surgery

The control of surgical site infection in orthopedic surgery is justified because of the bone exposure. This work shows a prospective exploratory study aimed to assess the impact of particulate matter, microbiota in air and resistance profile of Staphyiococcus aureus in suspension in the intraoperative orthopedic procedures in a medium-sized hospital in countryside of São Paulo state (São Carlos, SP). It was identified the presence of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus spp. and Shigelia spp. in 25%, 75% and 25% of samples, respectiveiy. Susceptibility testing was performed for Staphylococcus aureus isolated from the operating room air, and it was found that the bacteria showed sensitivity to only two of the fifteen antimicrobials tested. it was observed that during surgical procedures there was a significant increase in the suspended particulate matter.References
