Factors associated with surgical site infections in a hospital in the Western Brazilian Amazon

Purpose: To identify the factors associated with Surgical Site Infections (SSI) in a university hospital in Rio Branco, AC, Brazil. Method: A cross-sectional study. Data collection included ali the patients with SSI in two surgical nursing wards. Results: Of the 2.203 patients, 81 had SSI, representing a prevalence of 3.68%. The SSI focused predominantly on women, mean age 48 years, low education and 10w socio economic status. The most common surgeries were related to SSI cholecystectomy and laparotomy in patients classified at risk ASA II, with hypertension and diabetes as comorbidities and shaved with a razor blade, besides other aspects. To the nursing staff, guidance on shaving closer to the surgery and utilization of tricotomizador electric is needed. To the doctors fit the observation on the surgeries in which more 1SC occur, surgical time, proper cleansing, and culture of secretions. Conclusion: This study revealed the predisposing factors for developing SSI and appropriate intervention actions.References
